Summer 2024 Labour Relations and Administrative Assistant Position

Job Summary: We are hiring 2 full-time Labour Relations & Administrative Assistants for the summer of 2024. In order to apply, you must have functional written and spoken French as well as a student enrolled in the Fall 2024 semester. This is a support role to our Executive team to assist with labour relations associated with our union members, and assist with the day to day functions and long term planning for the union. 25/hr for 350 hours between 5/31 and 8/31. In 1998, a partnership was formed between the Government of Quebec, the Federation of Workers of Quebec (FTQ), and the Fonds de solidarité FTQ to fund summer jobs for students. A memorandum of understanding was signed on July 15 to create the Quebec Student Solidarity Work Fund (FESTQ), with an initial investment of $20 million from the FTQ Solidarity Fund and the Ministry of the Economy, Innovation and Energy (MEIE). Over 25 years, the returns from this investment have subsidized thousands of jobs in various sectors including small businesses, social enterprises, community organizations, unions, and cooperatives in Quebec.

Detailed Position Description

Working conditions: 

  • This is a temporary contract, and is a unionized position under the The General Union/Syndicat General - the following work conditions are a part of the bargained collective agreement between the AMUSE Staff Union & the AMUSE;

  • Rate: $25/hr; 

  • Bonuses: $60 monthly stipend towards travel & tech - $150 monthly stipend towards healthcare;

  • 4 sick days;

  • 350 hours over May through August 2024 - 350 hours is the minimum requirement and candidates must be available for this amount of time. 

  • Schedule: at least ten (10) thirty-five (35) hour weeks. You will be required to do a combination of remote work & in-person work. 

IMPORTANT: Unfortunately the AMUSE office located on McGill campus is not an accessible location and does require the use of stairs to reach the physical office location;

  • Exact schedule determined on a monthly basis with the relevant union staff. 


Job Requirements: 

  • Requires comfortable knowledge of written and spoken French, particularly to attend mandatory a training solely offered in French; 

  • Understanding and passion for labour unions, collective bargaining, collective agreements, workers’ rights etc. ;

  • Knowledge of Google workspace and tools, databases and data-entry systems;

  • Communication & Teamwork Skills;

  • Organizational Skills

Assets for the position: 

  • Knowledge or general understanding of the Tribunal Adminstratif du Travail

  • Knowledge or general understanding of the Labour Standards Act and the Civil Code of Quebec

  • Knowledge of database software or programs (For Example: Jira, Filemaker Pro etc) 

  • Experience with bylaw and policy creation 

  • Research experience

The 2024 summer Labour Relation and Administrative Assistants will primarily assist the Executive team to work on Labour Relation matters of the union, assist with long term and strategic planning and goal setting, setting up crucial databases to preserve institutional knowledge related to Labour Relations of the Union, as well as assist in projects of policy and bylaw creation, implementation and documentation.

This summer job opportunity will give the right candidate direct experience with the internal workings of a labour union and what it entails when it comes to labour relations, bylaw and policy affairs and other labour union intricacies. It will also be a great opportunity to work within a passionate and fun team, with the common goal and principles of fighting for the health, safety and equity of workers within a labour union context, as well as unionized labour at McGill University. 

The summer Labour Relation and Administrative Assistants will be collaborating with various members of the exec committee as well as other fellow staff members. Weekly reports and meetings with members of the Executive, as well as regular Slack communication, will constitute the primary mode of record keeping and progress tracking for this position.

The prospective hires will be required to provide proof of university student status prior to being offered to sign the contract. Although work is undertaken primarily in English, written and spoken French knowledge is an important criteria of the role.
