AMUSE 2025 Special General Meeting

What is the special general meeting (SGM)?

The SGM is the meeting where AMUSE workers will discuss and vote on what working conditions we want to demand from McGill. Our working conditions are recorded in the collective agreement (CA), a legally binding contract between McGill and AMUSE that expired on May 31, 2025. Because AMUSE is a democratic organization of workers, the bargaining team cannot begin collective bargaining for our next CA until the members vote on bargaining demands. Additionally, SGMs are able to approve bylaws.

Who can participate in the SGM?

If you have an AMUSE job, you and all your AMUSE coworkers are invited to the SGM. To participate (to attend, to speak, to introduce motions, or to vote on motions), members must fill out an AMUSE membership card, which is free.

How can I participate in the SGM? Where and when is it?

We appreciate it if you RSVP for the SGM so we can ensure there is sufficient food. We are planning to have the SGM in a hybrid format, with the in-person meeting taking place at the Centre St. Pierre at 1212 Rue Panet (near Beaudry metro). It will be at Wednesday, September 24th at 6 PM.

Why is it so important that members attend the SGM?

The meeting can only take place if more than a quorum of (15) AMUSE members is present. Far more importantly, the fight to improve our working conditions is already underway, and if we do not demonstrate our solidarity and willingness to demand and fight for significant and desperately needed improvements to our working conditions, then we send the bargaining committee to the negotiating table all alone. To support our bargaining committee, we must unify around demands for concrete improvements. Attending the SGM is an important way for you to shape these demands and demonstrate your commitment to supporting our bargaining team.

How can I get involved in the SGM?

Most importantly, you can attend and invite your coworkers to attend. All members are able to make motions at the SGM. Members are encouraged to get in touch with an AMUSE steward, executive, or staffer if they are interested in helping to invite members to the SGM over calls or during workplace visits, if they are interested in presenting a motion, or if they would like to help coordinate food or other logistics for the meeting, or for any other reason.

How can I get involved in bargaining?

Members can fill out and distribute the bargaining research survey.
